A root canal is a procedure to remove the nerve from an infected or aching tooth to save the tooth.
The root canals are the parts of the tooth where the pulp containing the nerves and the blood vessels that feed the tooth are found. The infected tooth pulp is removed, the root canals are cleaned and enlarged, and a filling and sealant are put in the pulp's place. Following a root canal, it is generally necessary to place a crown on the tooth to secure and strengthen the tooth.
